Heavy rain wreaks havoc on roads

by isleofman.com 3rd December 2015

Floods bring dangerous driving conditions

Torrential rain has been causing serious problems on the Island's roads this afternoon, with many flooded or impassable (3 December).

The Department of Infrastructure says with drainage systems overpowered in places, there is 'substantial highway flooding' around the Island - driving conditions are dangerous, and the advice from emergency services is, don't travel unless you have to.

The Mountain Road is closed between Ramsey and Creg ny Baa due to a landslip, the Phildraw Road at Ballasalla is closed and there is flooding across both carriageways on the main road through Crosby.

Conditions are very poor on the Braaid to Foxdale road, with drivers reporting a 'deep and dangerous' fast-running stream between the MSPCA and Foxdale.

The road between Ellerslie and Marown school is only passable by four-wheel drive vehicles, while in the south, residents in Erin Way in Port Erin say a stream at the back of the estate has burst its banks, sending water cascading through back gardens and past properties.

Infrastructure teams together with Civil Defence and other agencies are responding to a heavy volume of calls from members of the public. Fire crews have been called out to pump cellars and a number of events tonight have been cancelled or postponed.

The advice from emergency services is don't drive unless you have to, and to tackle flooded roads with extreme care.
