The winner of the annual mathematics award donated by Nationwide International for the top GCSE student at Peel’s QE2 High School has unearthed an interesting story about her education.
The winner, Phoebe Munro of Foxdale, who achieved a 92% pass as the top mark in her GCSE Mathematics exam this summer, is the daughter of mathematics teacher Jonathan Munro.
However, not only has her father passed on his mathematics skills to Phoebe - he also taught Phoebe’s current mathematics teacher, the current Head of Mathematics at QE2 School - Olivia Graham.
Olivia took up the role as Head of Mathematics this year and was present when Phoebe received her award, together with a ?50 gift placed in a savings account, presented by David Findlay, senior marketing manager for sponsors Nationwide International.
He said, “It’s quite a coincidence. We had no idea this was the case until we visited the school to present the award.
“Phoebe has clearly had a double benefit during both her childhood and her education.”
Phoebe is now studying Mathematics at A Level, along with Geography, English Literature and History. But, with two years of hard work ahead of her, she has not yet given any thought to a future career.
“I’m not sure yet,” she said. “I’ll get the A levels out of the way first.”
