Sewerage rate hike 'essential' - Cannan

by isleofman.com 7th November 2015

MUA chairman says increased charges are necessary

The chairman of the Manx Utilities Authority says a 50 per cent rise in sewerage charges is regrettable - but necessary.

Alf Cannan will ask for Tynwald approval to increase the sewerage rate imposed on Island households last year, from 61 pence in the pound, to 92.

Plans for a flat £50 charge on households were dropped, and replaced with a charge based on rateable values, seen as fairer.

A major review of different charging regimes has concluded the Isle of Man's system for funding sewerage services is similar to those in many other parts of the British Isles.

Mr Cannan says costs have to be passed on to consumers.

If Tynwald approves the rise, it will apply from 2016.
