Investigation into Wright's Pit East

MHK's concerns to form part of wide review

An MHK's concerns about what he claims is a potential environmental disaster have been highlighted in Tynwald.

Onchan member Peter Karran raised the issue of coastal erosion at Wright's Pit East near the Point of Ayre, and called on the Department of Environment to investigate it closely.

DEFA will now assess whether it's likely waste or residue has been released into the marine environment, causing marine pollution, and the feasibility of transferring waste from the site to the incinerator in Douglas.

After an amendment from minister Richard Ronan, the department will report back to Tynwald by next July as part of a national strategy covering sea defences, flooding and coastal erosion.
