MHK probes UK actuaries' view of NI fund

Chris Thomas asks whether gov has done enough to ensure NI future

An MHK is asking whether the Manx government has done enough to ensure the long-term viability of the Island's National Insurance fund.

In May 2014, UK Government actuaries said the fund would be exhausted in 40 years, unless the NI system was changed.

The Treasury minister promised firm action, such as raising the state retirement age, to ensure more goes into the fund than is taken out.

The UK actuaries have since been asked if the Manx proposals, which also include breaking links with the UK system, will reverse the shortfall.

But their response has not been made public.

West Douglas MHK Chris Thomas wants to know why.

More on this in Monday's Mandate programme on FM from 7.30.
