The people of Douglas and the Isle of Man are invited to show solidarity with the French nation on Sunday November 22 following the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, the Island’s Honorary French Consul Annie Nedellec has confirmed.
‘In collaboration with Douglas Borough Council we are inviting people to gather at Douglas war memorial at 2.30pm on Sunday November 22 for a minute’s silence and then to walk together in quiet reflection to the Sea Terminal,’ said Mrs Nedellec.
‘This will be very much a muted and low-key event, although those attending might consider wearing an item of clothing in red, white and blue to symbolise the Tricolore.
‘Importantly the event will serve to unite us and pay tribute to those killed and injured on Friday November 13 in what was the worst act of violence in France since the Second World War.
‘The events of that night have deeply touched the French and the wider Isle of Man community and I welcome Douglas Borough Council’s cooperation in providing this opportunity for us to come together and stand united to show support, not only for the people of France at this time of national mourning, but also for the universal values of peace, liberty and freedom.’
Council leader David Christian said: ‘These unprovoked attacks on innocent people in Paris were a deeply shocking reminder of the fragile world in which we live. This week the French flag will be flown at half mast in Ridgeway Street adjacent to Douglas town hall and at the Douglas war memorial as a mark of respect and to demonstrate the Manx capital’s solidarity with the French capital and the French nation.
‘Our hearts go out to the island’s French community and to the people of France whose pain we feel. We are shocked and united with them in sadness. Nous sommes tous ensemble.’
In tribute to those killed in the Paris attacks the Council has offered Mrs Nedellec the use of Douglas town hall to leave a Book of Condolence which will be available for signing Monday to Friday from 8.45am to 5.15pm.
