As Manx National Heritage opened their new ‘Kingdom of Man’ gallery at the House of Manannan this week the Celtic League have used the occasion to make a further request for the Manx Government to look for the return of the 'Island of the Chronicles of the Kings of Man and the Isles' manuscript, which is held in the British Library in London.
The new gallery in Peel tells the story of one of the most significant periods of the Island’s history between AD 1000 and 1300 when the Isle of Man was the seat of power of a sea kingdom formed of the Outer and Inner Hebrides, Skye and Argyll.
From the Island, the Kings of Mann and the Isles ruled both the lands and the vital sea route that ran through the heart of what now the British Isles.
The Celtic League information service says it's a mistake to hold this major exhibition whilst missing its most significant part of the exhibit.
In the past the manuscripts have been loaned back the to Manx Museum but have always had to return to British museum.
In 2004 the Celtic League demanded the return of the Chronicles to the Isle of Man saying it was important for the British Library to recognise that the Chronicles rightfully belong back on the Island.
