Youth survey will help agencies target services

by isleofman.com 2nd November 2015
A survey of young people will help the Isle of Man Government and partner agencies to better plan and target services.

The biennial survey of 11 to 18-year-olds begins on Friday (6th November) and runs until the end of the year.

The survey is being conducted by a new charitable organisation, the Youth Trust, which will report the findings to the Children’s Services Partnership.

Previous surveys have been run by the Partnership – which is made up of Government Departments that work most closely with young people.

The Youth Trust will encourage young people to lead healthier lifestyles, achieve their potential and contribute to the community.

Ken Callister, Principal Youth Officer with the DEC, said: ‘Government’s priorities include improving the quality of life of young people, giving them access to appropriate support and anticipating their needs when planning services.

‘The Youth Trust has been established to be voice of young people and pull together the many services and opportunities that are available under the Youth Service’s banner “things to do, places to go and people to talk to”.

‘The Youth Service has traditionally co-ordinated this work but it was felt the time was right to place this at arm’s length from the Government and provide a more community-focused approach.

‘The trust’s focus will be on where young people can turn to for help and support with issues they face as they grow up.

‘The trust will help young people get their views taken into account when services are planned, delivered and evaluated.’

The survey comprises 50 questions relating to schooling, leisure, health, social attitudes, lifestyle choices and wellbeing and will take 20 minutes to complete.

It can be accessed by visiting www.youth.im and clicking on the survey tab.

Ken said: ‘The 2013 survey elicited 1,477 responses and we are looking for a similar response rate so we can be sure it represents the views of 11-18-year-olds.

‘In response to the last survey, we strengthened existing services and planned new projects,’ said Ken.

‘As examples, we launched the multi-agency Manx Motor Meet, which equips young drivers with skills, and improved access to support for emotional health and wellbeing, strengthening listening services in schools and training staff as emotional first aiders.’
