OCTOBER LUNCH
The October lunch was attended by 33 members, by one members' guest, and by our Speaker Grahame Bell who, with the aid of slides, gave a very clear and informative talk entitled “How I took on Alzheimers, Isle of Man”. After retirement from the Police in 2010 after 31 years service, Grahame became a University lecturer specialising in Forensic Science and is now Services Manager with the Alzheimers Society in Douglas which only came into existence as a Manx charity during 2014. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia and members received a very clear description of the symptons of the disease, how it is diagnosed, and the factors that can put someone at risk of developing it. Grahame went on to explain that, although there is currently no cure for Alzheimers disease, there is a lot that can be done to enable someone to live well with the condition. There are in the region of 1500 people suffering from the disease in the Isle of Man and Grahame detailed the many ways that our local Alzheimers Society provides them with support.
