Isle of Man Archery Club Report

by isleofman.com 20th October 2015
The IoM Archery Club met at Onchan on Sunday to shoot a Worcester Round as part of the Club’s Scratch League. The Worcester consists of 60 arrows shot in groups of 5 with a maximum score of 300.

The Gents Compound saw a three way shoot off between Rhys Moore, Pete Mumford and Colin Moore. Colin sadly had two misses which effectively put paid to his challenge. Things were closer between Rhys and Pete however with Pete dropping only six points over the morning. Rhys Moore, shooting the Worcester for the first time since switching to Compound, did just a little better dropping only three points short of a maximum 300 to take the win. Both men carried on into the afternoon session to shoot a double Worcester with Rhys Moore once again taking the win.

The Gents Recurve provided the largest field of the day with four men; Danny Cowin, Dave Berry, Matt Elliott and John Hall all aiming for victory. Danny Cowin, in spite of accidently shooting 6 arrows in one end, led from start to finish although his score was some way below his best for the round. Dave Berry, still working his way his way in after returning from injury, suffered a miss in the last end of the morning and finished second. The fight for the last place on the podium between John Hill and Matt Elliott was a close one. John led for the first three ends in spite of having four misses to Matt’s one but another miss by John in the fourth end allowed Matt to leap frog him and take a lead of 4 points. The fifth end saw Matt struggle another miss allowed John to go back into the lead. Unfortunately John then had three misses with his last ten arrows while Matt shot steadily to take third place.

Barbara Harris was the only Lady Recurver in evidence. Not having shot since the first week indoors Harris was sadly out of practice straying into the low scoring areas of the target too many times and recording a miss. Her score was some way below her personal best for the round.

James Hill was the runaway winner in the Junior Boys Recurve division, adding an excellent 25 points to his pb for the round. Jacob Brookes added 33 points to his personal best for the round but had to settle for third place behind Toby Young.

Tilly Ashton, the only Junior Girl in action on Sunday, was shooting the round for the first time and put in a respectable score on a much smaller target face than she is used to.
