'A fearless champion of her constituents' - Brenda Cannell was thanked in the House of Keys this morning for decades of public service.
Tribute was paid to Mrs Cannell by Speaker of the House Steve Rodan who said that during her time as MHK she served in many capacities, including as chairman of the water authority and planning committee, in almost every department of government and numerous committees of Tynwald.
Mrs Cannell resigned after losing her husband, Charlie, earlier this year.
Mr Rodan said: 'I think we can all agree that over the years she proved to be a fearless champion of her constituents and was a vigorous debater to say the least. We are sorry she has had to step down from public life following her recent bereavement.
'Join with me in wishing Brenda Cannell all the very, very best and every happiness in the years ahead and to thank her for her huge contribution to the House of Keys and to public life in this island.'
Today (Tuesday) is the deadline for candidates to come forward to fill the Douglas East vacancy left by Mrs Cannell. So far nine people have declared they are standing.
