Dozens of portions of fish & chips were delivered to the beach as a reward for a company’s efforts to help the charity Beach Buddies on a beach cleaning session at Ballaugh Cronk.
Staff from the specialist manufacturing company DLP Limited, based in Union Mills, turned out in force with their families, collecting large amounts of rubbish on a glorious summer’s evening.
The reward for their efforts was the arrival of warmly greeted portions of fish & chips provided by a mobile catering service.
“This was another first for Beach Buddies,” said a spokesman for Beach Buddies. “We’ve had volunteers bring picnics before, but when all these dozens of fish & chips arrived it was definitely something a bit different.”
DLP Limited had 54 staff and family members on the beach, and spent almost two hours clearing rubbish from around two miles of beach. They collected a total of 35 bags of rubbish, together with large amounts of commercial fishing gear, including fish boxes, lobster pots, ropes and nets.
The bags were removed by Beach Buddies, with many of the items, such as plastic bottles, glass and tin cans, being recycled.
A small team of DLP staff also joined Beach Buddies in a venture two miles north of Ballaugh when the charity’s truck was used to retrieve some heavy items of marine rubbish which had been gathered by volunteers over a period of several weeks.
“We had a lot of support from staff for the idea of a beach cleaning session,” said DLP senior executive director Tim Baker, “and judging by the response afterwards we will definitely be doing this again. We were really pleased by our team’s contribution to keeping our community’s beaches in good order.”
