Winter vehicle checks on offer at Manx Motor Meet

by isleofman.com 8th October 2015
Island motorists will have an opportunity to put their vehicles through a free winter health check as part of the Manx Motor Meet being held in Douglas next week.

Drivers of all ages are encouraged to attend the Bowl car park between 7pm and 9.30pm on Friday 16 October to enhance their practical skills, knowledge and safety.

It is hoped to build on the popularity of similar events that have taken place around the Island over the past year. Hundreds of people have taken advantage of friendly and practical advice from experienced drivers, mechanics and road safety officers.

The successful format is being retained, with contributions from the Isle of Man Constabulary, Youth Services, Manx Auto Sport, Energy FM and a number of corporate sponsors.

As well as learning if their vehicles are prepared for the demands of the winter months, participants will be able to pick up useful tips and guidance and enter competitions to win a variety of prizes. There will also be free pizza, a collision extraction demonstration by the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service and an opportunity to sit in the passenger seat during a special auto test.

The overall aim is to encourage safer driving and support efforts to reduce the number of fatalities and serious incidents on Manx roads.

Gordon Edwards, Road Safety Manager, said: ‘The regional Motor Meets have been well supported and I hope the latest event in Douglas attracts another strong turnout. This is an opportunity for drivers to learn skills that will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives.’

Home Affairs Minister Juan Watterson MHK added: ‘The Chief Constable’s annual report for 2014-15 highlights a number of issues about road safety and driving standards in the Isle of Man. Driver education is an important part of our efforts to safeguard the community and the Motor Meets encourage different agencies to get together to offer practical advice and support in a fun way.’

The organisers wish to thank all the local businesses supporting the event.
