The Isle of Man Sea Kayak Symposium took place last week in warm and sunny conditions. The event, now in its 13th year attracts sea kayakers and coaches from around the world who are attracted to the sea kayaking environment the island offers.
The main event, the International Training Weekend took place on Saturday and Sunday which coincided with strong spring tides to create an ideal training ground around the Calf of Man with groups paddling from both Port Erin and Port St Mary over the weekend.
One of the main highlights this year was a talk by explorer Jason Lewis in conjunction with the Manx Lit Fest on Saturday evening at the Claremont Hotel, Douglas. Jason, an award-winning author, adventurer and sustainability campaigner is recognized by Guinness World Records as the first person to circumnavigate the Earth without using motors or sails. Taking thirteen years to complete he walked, cycled and inline skated five continents, and kayaked, swam, rowed, and pedalled a boat across the rivers, seas, and oceans. The 46,505-mile journey was hailed “the last great first for circumnavigation” by The Sunday Times.
Director of Adventurous Experiences Keirron Tastagh said: "The symposium is now well established and we always look forward to meeting those returning each year, along with new students. Thanks to our supporters the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company and Sea Kayaking UK we can continue to grow the event each year."
