'A wonderful custodian of the countryside' - that's the tribute to John Kennaugh, who died today, from Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister Richard Ronan.
Mr Ronan joins a host of people who have been paying tribute to the well known farmer and broadcaster, who has died aged 77 after a short illness.
Mr Ronan said: 'John was a proud Manxman and selflessly serving the community was at the heart of all he did, whether as Captain of the Parish, commissioner, JP or as life member of MNFU, with whom he served for over half a century.
'John’s knowledge of Manx traditional rural life and its modern-day challenges was unparalleled. Through his informative and enjoyable broadcasts, he engaged everyone, whether a town or country-dweller, in matters to do with farming and agriculture.
'As a farmer all his life, John was a wonderful custodian of the countryside and I know my predecessor as Minister, Phil Gawne MHK, was delighted to honour him at the 2013 Farming and Conservation Awards, run by the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group. The thoughts of everyone at DEFA are with John’s family at this time.'
Earlier today, Bishop Robert Paterson paid tribute, stating: 'Very sad to hear of John Kennaugh's death: a great Manxman, broadcaster, farmer, raconteur and Christian.'
Mr Kennaugh is pictured receiving his honorary life membership of the Manx National Farmers' Union last year.
