The Isle of Man Constabulary has been saddened by the news of the death of Margaret Corkill on 6th September. Margaret was highly regarded in the Constabulary and had the accolade of being the first female Police Officer recruited on the Isle of Man.
Margaret had previously worked as a civilian clerical officer at Ramsey police station, before being selected into the Constabulary in September 1967. However, her start had to wait until the regulations were changed to set out pay and conditions for female Officers. Margaret, along with other Officers from the Island trained at Police Training Centre, Bruche, and passed out of training in May 1968.
Margaret served mainly as a uniformed Officer, spending several years in the Ports unit. Her last 4 years were spent working in the CID Records Department, before retiring from the Constabulary in August 1988.
It was in the Isle of Man Constabulary that she met her husband, Sergeant Archie Corkill, who retired from the Constabulary some time before Margaret.
Chief Constable Gary Roberts said: “I had the privilege of working with Margaret. She was a kind , decent and compassionate woman, who exemplified all that is good about the Constabulary. She was well known, much liked and widely respected across the whole community and I am sure that many people will have fond memories of her. Everyone in the Constabulary is thinking of her family and friends at this sad time.”
