Net gains for businesses playing badminton

by isleofman.com 11th September 2015
The business world tried its hand at badminton on Saturday as Manx Sports and Recreation (MSR) hosted its annual tournament for local companies.

Eight teams took part in the event, held at the NSC, organised by the Isle of Man Badminton Association and sponsored by EY.

Kerry Quayle, Badminton Development Officer with MSR, said the tournament was run on a round robin basis to give participants as much time as possible on court.

Many of the 40 participants were trying the sport for the first time.

It’s hope they’ll stay involved, joining in ‘No Strings’ sessions, held at the NSC every Tuesday evening during term time, or signing up for a local club.

Kerry said: ‘It’s one of our key aims aim to increase the number of people regularly involved in community sport. As well as being fun, events like this can encourage people into sports they might not have tried.’

The tournament also provided the opportunity for up and coming officials to take charge of matches, mentored by qualified umpires.

The tournament winner was a team from Old Mutual International, which received a trophy from Bryan Birchenough of EY.
