Wi-Manx are continuing their support of local sport this year as it is announced the Wi-Manx Corporate Handball Cup will be held on 26th September at the NSC in Douglas from 11am. Welcoming players of all abilities, the objective of the Cup is to increase awareness and participation of handball and the day will offer co-workers and friends alike a great team building event. In turn, the Isle of Man Handball Association hopes to promote further interest in the upcoming league which starts back on Saturday 24th October 2015.
The annual tournament typically attracts 50 – 100 people and this year, following the sponsorship of the island’s first handball festival earlier this summer which raised money for The Jan McElroy Community Sports Hall in Ramsey, Wi-Manx were keen to continue to support the popular sport.
Kate Hegarty, Director at Wi-Manx said:
“We’d really like to encourage local brands and companies to take part in what will be a fun afternoon. You don’t have to have played before and we’re welcoming teams of all ability, even first timers so there’s no reason not to come along.
We’re hoping for a great turn out and even if you’ve never watched a game of handball before, use this as a taster to learn more about it.”
Mick Hegarty, Chairman of the Isle of Man Olympic Handball Association said of the upcoming Cup:
“We wanted to make the event as appealing as possible to entries so there will be three categories, a male, female and mixed. Whether you’ve not played in years, never played before or are interested in trying handball, we’d welcome you to come along and take part. We especially encourage kids to pop down and see what it’s all about because it’s great for fitness, meeting new people and learning teamwork skills.
Long term, our strategy to raise the profile of the sport includes rolling handball out in schools to encourage youth development, growing our own island league, and developing Manx talent to build a squad for future international fixtures.”
To show your interest in the Wi-Manx Corporate Handball Cup, apply for entry by email mhiomhandball@gmail.com or simply come along on the day.
