Young hero who put others first is recognised by Rotary

by isleofman.com 7th September 2015
The Rotary Club of Douglas has paid tribute to a young boy who single-handedly raised ?3,000 for the provision of emergency ShelterBoxes through overcoming a difficult challenge of his own.

Mark Lalor-Smith, badly injured in a road traffic accident in Turkey, ignored his own injuries to undertake a sponsored walk from the Manx Electric Railway Depot to Douglas War Memorial. To the amazement of his sponsors, he cheerfully completed the distance to buy six of the special boxes distributed to hundreds of thousands of families across the world every year, including most recently Nepal.

Each ShelterBox, costing ?500, provides emergency shelter and other lifesaving equipment which can help up to ten people who have lost everything following a disaster.

President of Douglas Rotary Club, Kevin Kneen, said the Club had been ?humbled' and ?inspired' by Mark's effort, which will contribute to saving the lives of 60 people. The Junior Recognition Award is only the third such award made by the Club since 2011.
