Douglas Borough Council has welcomed the launch of a new website devoted to the horse tram service.

Created by independent volunteer community group Friends of Douglas Bay Horse Tramway, friendsofdbht.org traces the history of the service from its origins in 1876 and provides details of the tramcar fleet and the horses - including a ‘trammers’ gallery’ - along with the current timetable and fares.

Regeneration and community committee chairman Councillor John Skinner said: ‘The Friends of Douglas Bay Horse Tramway have produced a website which is a fitting tribute to this unique heritage attraction famed the world over. It has clearly been created by people who hold the service in great affection, who recognise the hard work of all those involved in its operation and who are committed to promoting the tramway to a worldwide audience. The council would also welcome opportunities to partner with the Friends of Douglas Bay Horse Tramway in possible future renovation projects.’

Stuart Mullan of the Friends of Douglas Bay Horse Tramway said: ‘We look forward to working alongside Douglas Borough Council. We're aiming to promote the tramway and its heritage significance to a far wider global audience and we hope many more individuals will want to show their support by becoming Friends.’

Councillor Skinner added: ‘The council fully supports this excellent community project, which will be of great value to visitors and local residents alike, and we will watch its development with great interest.’

The 2015 Douglas horse tram season runs daily until September 13.
