Beach Buddies goes south on Saturday

by isleofman.com 27th August 2015

After a break of a few weeks, due to a variety of reasons, Beach Buddies is back in full swing again this weekend, and will be holding a beach cleaning event for volunteers at Castletown Bay on Saturday morning.

Meet at the second car park past Hango Hill from 10.30am, where the Beach Buddies' truck will be parked. We provide all the necessary equipment, including some brand new litterpickers, courtesy of Douglas Town Council (many, many thanks - these are great!), gloves and bin bags and we take away all the rubbish afterwards, recycling where possible.

We are expecting some new volunteers this weekend, and we will also be joined later in the morning by a team of staff from IQE (better known under the Simcocks name) who are spending most of their day off helping us, as part of the company’s initiative to support worthy causes in the local community. This is very much appreciated. Thank you to IQE.

The weather forecast, for a change, seems to be pretty much OK, so we are all looking forward to getting back into team action. Please note, we haven’t been sitting on our backsides this last few weeks! We have emptied our Big Beach Bins at venues all over the Island a number of times, collecting several tonnes of rubbish and recycling considerable amounts.

One bin - at Blue Point - had a huge amount of rubbish both inside and outside the bin, with what must have been at least ?200 worth of camping gear, tents, chairs etc etc, plus a seriously wasteful amount of unused food. Some people have more money than sense! At least they left the items alongside the bin. Thanks.

Our Craft Days at our Niarbyl Visitor Centre have proved increasingly popular and some wonderful creations have been made by the families visiting us this last few weeks. We are extending the craft days to nest week. If you are interested please send an email to beach buddies@manx.net for details. We are also planning to have some Autumn, Hop Tu Naa and Christmas Craft Days - watch this space!

Our thanks are always due to the sponsors who have donated to keep us going. It is truly appreciated, especially when there are so many other wonderful charities which do such brilliant work, such as Hospice, Breakthrough Breast Cancer, Cancer Research and Cruse Bereavement, to name but a few.
