The Isle of Man will be supporting Merchant Navy Day on Thursday 3rd September by flying the British Red Ensign from public buildings.
Merchant Navy Day celebrates the role of the British Merchant fleet during the two world wars and their continued work around the globe today.
The Isle of Man is participating in this event alongside the United Kingdom by flying the British Red Ensign, a red flag with the Union Jack in the top left hand corner, from certain public buildings. This is supported by the Chief Minister and the flag will fly from Government Offices on that day.
Laurence Skelly MHK, Minister for the Department of Economic Development, commented:
‘We are very proud of our maritime heritage and our modern fleet of ocean going vessels on the Isle of Man Ship Register. I am very happy to support this initiative and would like to thank my colleagues in Tynwald and other government departments for getting behind it. Merchant Navy Day is a chance to show our support and make sure that seafarers do not feel forgotten.’
Dick Welsh, Director of the Isle of Man Ship Registry, commented:
‘This is a great initiative to recognise our own Manx fleet and the seafarers sailing today. As an Island nation, we are all aware of our reliance on ships to bring in our supplies and it is the same around the globe, where ships carry more than 95% of world trade.
‘If you see a new flag flying from a government building on 3rd September you should stop and think of the men, women and ships of the Merchant Navy. On the Island, we will fly our own version of the British Red Ensign with the proud addition of the Three Legs of Man. ‘
This initiative is part of a UK National Campaign to support the maritime charity King George V Fund for Sailors which also has a very active branch on the Isle of Man.
Captain Peter Corrin, representing the King George V Fund for Sailors, said:
‘I am delighted with the response and support we have received from the Isle of Man Government in flying the ensign from their buildings. I very much hope you will support this campaign to remember the sacrifices, salute the courage and support the future of the often unsung personnel of our Merchant Navy.’
