Island at War event this weekend

by isleofman.com 20th August 2015
Sandbags are being stockpiled, barbed wire uncoiled and military vehicles are quietly getting into position for the 5th annual Island at War weekend.

Staged by Isle of Man Railways along the Steam Railway between Douglas and Port Erin, the event involves the whole community including upwards of 150 Scouts and a train load of veterans.

All steam train passengers will be able to view the crashed Spitfire and a guarded artillery vehicle en route to Port Erin. The Women’s Institute will be out in force with sales of crafts and cakes plus there’s a variety of music to bring the spirit of wartime alive.

Top of the bill are The Fabulous D-Day Darlings along with the Roc Vannin Choir, the Southern Bells, the WI Choir and Steph Chatterley, singing for various train arrivals and departures at Douglas, Castletown and Port Erin.

From 10am until 5pm on both days of the weekend, Douglas Station will be transformed into a military outpost from World War II with a craft marquee and a ‘hairraid’ shelter for ladies to get a 1940s hairstyle prior to boarding the train.

Fun activities for children include a Chinese Whispers game on board the train with the Explorer Scouts plus a letter sorting competition on the Travelling Post Office.

Standard fares apply during the weekend and Go cards will be accepted. For full details, pick up an Island at War leaflet from any railway station or find details online at www.iombusandrail.info.
