Isle of Man Archery Club Report - 16th August

by isleofman.com 18th August 2015
Sunday saw the best shooting weather of the season so far with soaring temperatures and very little wind. Only a handful of archers turned up to enjoy the sunshine and some of those could only shoot for half the day due to prior commitments. The round of the day was a WA1440; that is 3 dozen arrows at each of four distances – 90, 70, 50, 30m for the men and 70, 60, 50, 30m for the women. The juniors who turned up in the afternoon shot a Short Metric round according to their age group.

The Gents Compound division provided one of the few direct competitions of the day with father and son, Dave and Rhys Moore, battling it out. Rhys having lost to his father the week before was looking for payback. After the first distance Rhys in spite of recording a miss had a 6 point lead over Dave. At the 70m distance Rhys winged an arrow away into the 3 which allowed Dave to close the gap to 2 points.

An excellent first dozen arrows at 50m had Rhys convinced that he would not only secure victory but also break the 1300 barrier for the first time. It was during the next end that Rhys let loose one of the most perfect arrows ever seen at the club. It hit the precise centre of the target, hitting the X which is marked there. This is known in the club as ‘shooting the spider’. The only trouble was that he had put this perfect arrow into the centre of his Father’s target rather than his own and so it had to be counted as a miss. It was difficult to tell who was beaming the most – the sun or Dave Moore. Rhys did go on to take the victory and record a new pb but missed out on breaking 1300 by just 5 points.

The Gents Recurve saw a face-off between Danny Cowin and guest archer Thomas Bott. Danny led after the first distance but put in a relatively poor second dozen arrows at 70m which allowed Thomas to overhaul him. Once Bott was in front he stayed there and produced his best score of the season.

Junior archers Joseph Reaney, James Hill and Jacob Brookes arrived in the afternoon and took advantage of the excellent conditions to post personal best scores. Shooting a Short Metric 3 James added 30 points to his previous best, while Joseph added 38 points to his to take the win. Jacob shot a Short Metric 4 round and recorded an impressive total for his first attempt.
