Manx Cricket Report

Ramsey B are the new holders of the Blincoe Cup. In Sunday’s final they beat the Schools Eleven by ten wickets to win the trophy for only the third time.

This was a very even match until a savage display of power hitting in Ramsey’s second innings by Tom Howard and Dan Kelly turned the game against the scholars.

Batting first Ramsey were pinned back to 108 for 8 from their 15 overs. Dom Howard made an excellent 32 not out, Tom Howard hit 27 and Shaun Kelly 17.

Pick of the bowlers was Sam Callister whose two overs went for only three runs and yielded two wickets. Tom Burrows and Sam Riordan also took two wickets each in a good display by the Schools Eleven.

They were then dismissed for 96 to give Ramsey a narrow first innings lead of 12 runs. George Burrows scored an excellent 30 and all was going well until Dom Howard took the ball.

He came on as Ramsey’s eighth bowler, trapped Burrows lbw and then devastated the Schools’ lower order with four wickets for just six runs.

The Schools then batted again, but lost two wickets before the deficit was wiped off. Riordan and George Burrows began to build a solid lead before Andy Ball nipped in to claim three wickets.

Riordan fell to Brian Arnold for a well struck 38 and the innings ended on 97.

That left Ramsey needing 86 for victory and they achieved this in style thanks to openers Tom Howard and Dan Kelly.

Such was the force of their batting, the target was reached in only five overs. Kelly crashed 33 and Howard a sparkling 44 not out. He was named as Man of the Match and Ramsey celebrated their first Blincoe final win since 2008.

With only two matches left, the Premiership title could be decided this week-end.

Peel and St John’s are top of the table with a 13 point gap over second placed Cronkbourne. The Saints have a home game on Sunday against lowly Ramsey whom they defeated by nine wickets earlier in the season.

They had dismissed the northern club for only 40 with Akkie van den Berg taking 4 -7 while Kieron Cawte and Nick Hawke each claimed three wickets.

That suggests another Peel and St John’s victory, so the pressure is on Cronkbourne to keep in the title hunt.

However the Douglas side are away at Crosby who are just seven points below them in third place. This could be very tricky for Steve Slack’s team, but in the earlier game at Tromode it was the Marown side which came unstuck.

They were bowled out for 67 by Jaco Jansen, Sam Kebbell and Carl Wagstaffe who each took three wickets. Cronkbourne swept to a six wicket win and all 20 points.

Since then Crosby have won four of their last five games and now look a different side. The result could be too close to call.

The other fixture sees Valkyres at home to Castletown. A win for Valkyres could take them off bottom place, but victory for the Town might see them move into the third slot.
