Campaigners reject prom plan revision

by isleofman.com 4th August 2015

An attempt by the government to address the concerns of people who are against placing the horse tram on the Douglas promenade walkway has failed.

Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne revised the scheme to make part of the walkway wider and said this would better accommodate a horse tram track that would be sharing the prom with walkers and cyclists.

But campaigners say it won't work. A facebook group called 'Keep cars and horse trams off the walkway' has attracted more than 3,000 supporters. It was started in May this year by Tim Knott, David Griffin and Murray Lambden.

They say: 'Yes, the Minister has taken account of some of the criticisms of the scheme but over the last few months all he has achieved is making a really terrible plan into a slightly less bad one.'

Planning permission is now being sought for the revised plan and Mr Gawne hopes to win the support of Tynwald at the parliament's November or December sitting.
