Manx Premier League Cricket Report

by isleofman.com 3rd August 2015

Glashtyns have won the Manx Premier League. They took maximum points from Saturday’s games while nearest rivals Manannans suffered two defeats.

Glashtyns now have a six point lead at the top of the table and cannot be caught in the final set of fixtures in three weeks’ time.

In the first match of the day Bugganes scored 122 for 6 from their twenty overs with Pete Lewis hitting 56. Jaco Jansen took two wickets at less than four an over.

Glashtyns knocked off the runs for the loss of one wicket with two overs to spare. Skipper Ollie Webster struck 55 not out and Phil Littlejohns made 44 which included four sixes.

In the next game Bugganes bounced back to get their first MPL win. They bowled out Manannans for 111 despite 27 from Adam McAuley and 24 by Akkie van den Berg.

Floris Venter took 4 -20 while Chris Langford and Sam Mills each claimed two victims.

Opener Max Stokoe led the reply with a well struck 39. At first the side were behind the required run rate, but stepped up the pace as Chris Hawke (24) and Chris Langford (20no) took control.

Bugganes reached their target for the loss of four wickets and with two overs to spare.

After that defeat, Manannans were in trouble. They were four points behind the leaders in the table and had to win their final game against Glashtyns to keep any title hopes alive.

They batted first and went straight on the attack. After two overs they had 14 on the board and looked comfortable at 33 for 2 from six overs.

Then disaster overtook them. Opener Adam McAuley was going well with 21 from 19 balls when he was unfortunately run out.

Ben Kebbell then bowled a blistering spell. He took 4 -10 in four overs, two of which were maidens. Kieron Cawte and Alex Stokoe collected two wickets each and Manannans were dismissed for 63 after 15 overs.

Despite an early wicket from Seth Aycock, Glashtyns cruised to victory and the title. Skipper Ollie Webster was again in command, striking an aggressive 47 from 27 balls. This contained six fours and a massive six.

This was an excellent day’s play with three absorbing matches, containing 45 fours and no fewer than nine sixes.

Glashtyns have now won seven of their eight games and will be out to dominate again in the last MPL matches at Crosby on Sunday August 23rd.
