The winners of the 2015 Energy Awards were announced this week with strong competition from a number of private sector companies and the public sector.
The awards recognise the achievements of local private and public sector organisations in making improvements to their energy efficiency and reducing their energy consumption and associated costs.
Tony Wild MLC, the Department’s Political Member with responsibility for Energy commented:
‘I would like to congratulate this year’s winners who have all demonstrated significant energy savings over the course of the past year. These organisations are helping to support the Government’s energy policy for the Isle of Man which aims to secure the efficient use of affordable energy and to minimise the impact of our energy use on the environment.’
This year, awards were presented for Best Innovation, Best Practice and Biggest Savings with public sector and private sector organisations each having their own category in respect of these.
The organisation demonstrating the biggest saving in the private sector was SNX Ltd for Bay View Farm, with an estimated ?80,000 saving after installing two wind turbines.
Steve Brown, Managing Director of SNX, commented:
‘To receive another two outright wins and two High Commendations against such strong contenders across all the categories is immensely satisfying and vindicates our efforts in bringing the very best technologies and methodologies to the Isle of Man.’
The Best Practice award went to Knockaloe Beg Farm who have consistently worked towards energy saving and environmentally sustainable tourist accommodation over the past 8 years.
The award for Best Innovation was given to the Salmon Centre and Ballacregga Cornmill Tea Rooms following the installation of a water source heat pump using the adjacent lake as the energy source.
Among the Public Sector winners were the Isle of Man Ship Registry and the Department of Infrastructure.
The Isle of Man Ship Registry won the award for Biggest Saving, through the introduction of the Green Ship Incentive Scheme which rewards shipping companies who adopt energy efficient designs.
David Morter, Deputy Director of the Isle of Man Ship Registry, commented:
‘We were delighted to win this award. The International Maritime Organisation has stipulated that all new vessels must be more energy efficient. Our scheme is simple - build or operate a vessel that exceeds the current applicable standards and we will discount your registration fees.’
The Department of Infrastructure was awarded the Best Practice (partnering with SNX Ltd) and Best Innovation awards following their work on air tightness and thermography testing on social houses and the pilot passive houses scheme at Janet’s Corner in Castletown.
