An absolutely jam packed course and Clubhouse representing all standards of Island Golf together with Ramsey Rugby Club remembered 2003 and 2011 Island Golf Champion and Ramsey Rugby Club hero, Davy Jones.
This annual tournament sponsored by Davy’s sister, Claire Poots was over-subscribed to say the least. Dave Harding organised the Rugby Club’s Golf day Texas scramble at Glen Truan. No one ever remembers who wins and this year was no different. Dave Harding and the players had a great day and excellent night out and will soon begin training for the same next year! The golf at Ramsey saw the course in great condition and Claire Poots, among many, thanked Ollie Webster, Jamie Arneil and the team for the care and attention they paid to putting on this star event. The Junior prize winners were Dylan Pickles and Ramsey Ball and the Ladies included Hannah Pullen and Jane Gaines although there were many other Juniors and Ladies competing in this event. The presence of many of Davy’s Island Golf Union Team friends was great to see and Paul Lowey, who played Davy in the 2003 and 2011 Men’s final’s put in a sterling performance 74 but was not in the gross competition prizes this time. Other good scores came from Brian Duggan on 71, John Brooks, Richard Skillicorn and Ged Power on 72, Geoff Skillicorn carding an excellent 73 and also on 74, Nick Caine and Jorge Wylde. Top of the gross list and first prize went to Chris Kneen with a 69 after birdies on the 4th, 6th, 12th and 14th holes.
Chris also came 4th in the nett competition just edged out by Jason Craine on count-back. It was a very close fight for the top prizes with Brian Kelly, Keith Ward, Matthew Nicholson all coming in with a nett 70 but not quite making the prize list after excellent performances. Nigel Gregg’s 69 came from a consistent back 9 but double bogeys on the opening two holes were crucially destructive. Jason Craine edged out Chris Kneen to take 3rd place on a nett 68 but I am convinced he would never have thought it would have ended up like that after an opening 10. He recovered dropping only 4 shots on the back 9 and this was just enough for Jason to take 3rd. Someone will be asking who are among the favourites for next Saturday’s Ramsey Town Cup and you have to include David Kinrade in your list. He has the ability to make birdies and proved this today with birdies on the 2nd, 6th, 14th and 16th. If he can eliminate the odd double bogey hole he will be a contender on Saturday. A nett 67 and 2nd place for David Kinrade was a pleasing result. Nett prize winner was Robbie Moore with a magnificent 64. Birdies on the 5th, 6th and 11th and ending with a majestic 2 on the 18th brought together a fine performance from him. What followed was an excellent evening’s entertainment at the Club and fond memories of Davy Jones, enough said!
Next Saturday is the Ramsey Town Cup and the beginning of Ramsey Golf week, details on the website and Facebook page.
