The staff of Aon Insurance created a new record when they tackled three beaches in one day as volunteers for the charity Beach Buddies.
It was the first time that three different beaches had been cleaned in one day by the same team, as the group removed rubbish from Spaldrick, Brewery Bay and Fleshwick.
Aon gave their staff the day off to get involved in a charity event of their choice, and decided to team up with Beach Buddies.
Within two hours, the group of 20 had made short work of leaving Spaldrick spotless, and chose to take on another challenge, at Brewery Bay.
Wet weather threatened to halt proceedings, but the Aon staff, suitably refreshed after lunch at the Shore Hotel, spent another hour removing more bags of marine litter.
Spurred on by this success, they then asked to move to Fleshwick, where another substantial amount of rubbish was removed, and taken to the southern recycling centre.
“There was no stopping the Aon staff,” said Bill Dale of Beach Buddies. “The original plan was to go to Spaldrick and clear the beach, and that would be that. But they had other ideas, and were full of enthusiasm.
“There was a great spirit amongst them, and it was no surprise after they sorted out Brewery Bay that they then wanted to take on Fleshwick. It’s the first time we have had a team go to three different beaches in one day. Brilliant.”
The Aon staff collected 15 bags of rubbish at Spaldrick, 19 bags at Brewery Bay and 12 more at Fleshwick - a total of 46.
