A team of four students from the Isle of Man will travel to Bulgaria later this month to compete at the International Linguistics Olympiad.
Daniel Quayle, Annie Lennon, Max Quayle and Dylan Leonine – will join young people from around the world at the 13th International Linguistics Olympiad in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria from 20th to 24th July.
The Olympiad aims to inspire young linguistic and language students to develop analytical, problem solving skills, enhancing their language and communications abilities. These are important in the global careers market, particularly in e-business.
Rob Teare, who organises the Isle of Man’s participation, explained: “This is the third time we have been able to send a team which shows the high skill level of problem-solving in our students. The team will have to think critically, analytically and laterally to solve some of the world’s toughest puzzles in language and linguistics.”
“Participating against 28 other nations gives the team the opportunity to be ambassadors for the Island.”
He said: “We are extremely grateful for the support provided to make this trip possible. Our thanks go to the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, the Elizabeth Clucas Fund and RL360.”
Team member Max Quayle, who is a student at Queen Elizabeth II High School said: “We are looking forward to the challenge of competing in Bulgaria later this month, and sharing information about the Island’s education and culture.”
Mark Woodward, Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Chief Executive, said: “We first supported students to attend the Olympiad two years ago and are more than happy to play our part once again. It is a fantastic opportunity for these students to represent the Island and test their skills against peers from around the world.”
