Castletown to host Manx Motor Meet

by isleofman.com 13th July 2015
Organisers of the popular Manx Motor Meet will be visiting the south of the Island this Friday (17 July 2015).

Castle Rushen High School car park will host the latest in the series of events aimed at helping new and experienced drivers to improve their skills and knowledge.

Participants are encouraged to turn up between 7pm and 9.30pm to pick up useful tips and guidance, learn how to change a wheel safely and to enter competitions. There will also be free refreshments, a demonstration by the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service and an opportunity to sit in the passenger seat during a special auto test.

The event is a joint initiative involving the Police, Youth Services, Manx Auto Sport and 3FM. The aim is to encourage safer driving across all age groups and support efforts to reduce the number of casualties and serious incidents on the Isle of Man’s roads.

It is hoped that as many people as possible will turn up in their vehicles and take advantage of friendly and practical advice from experienced drivers, mechanics and road safety officers.

Voirrey Kennaugh, Youth Officer, said: ‘The Motor Meets in Douglas, Ramsey and Peel have been very well supported and I hope the event in Castletown attracts a strong turnout. This is an opportunity for people to learn skills that will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives.’

Gordon Edwards, Road Safety Manager, added: ‘Statistics show that a disproportionate number of young and inexperienced drivers are killed or seriously injured on roads throughout the British Isles. In the Isle of Man police officers and youth workers are still seeing examples of irresponsible driving by a minority of drivers. The Motor Meets are a positive way for different agencies to get together to offer practical advice and support.’

The organisers wish to thank all the local businesses supporting the event.
