Tynwald exhibition marks 250th anniversary of Revestment Act

by isleofman.com 13th July 2015
The Tynwald Library is hosting an exhibition marking the 250th anniversary of the Revestment Act.

The Act saw the English Crown purchase the regalities of the Isle of Man from the Atholl family for ?70,000 and the British government empowered to exercise its authority over Manx customs duties in order to benefit from income from goods being brought into the Isle of Man and eradicate the 'running trade'.

The Act came into force with the granting of Royal Assent on May 10th 1765 and two months later, on July 11th, a Royal Proclamation was issued at Castle Rushen.

The President of Tynwald the Hon Clare Christian will note the anniversary of the Act in the July 21st sitting of Tynwald.

‘Marking the Revestment’, which examines why and how the Isle of Man was brought under British rule, has been made possible thanks to the assistance of Dr Christopher Gawne and Manx National Heritage and will run until the end of August Mondays to Fridays (excluding bank holidays) from 9am to 5pm in the Tynwald Library.

The proclamation of the terms of the Act of Revestment is on display in the Tynwald Legacy section of the Medieval Gallery at the Manx Museum and a digital image may be viewed online at www.imuseum.im.

Located on the ground floor of the Legislative Buildings in Finch Road the Tynwald Library exhibition space provides schools, youth, community and sporting organisations, as well as private individuals and commercial enterprises, with a secure, easily managed area in which to mount Manx-themed displays. There is no rental charge, only a small commission fee for sales by commercial operators.
