Local premiere of Phantom of the Opera

by isleofman.com 10th July 2015
The first British Isles amateur production of iconic musical The Phantom of the Opera will open at the Gaiety Theatre on August 10th, with support from SMP Partners.

Taylorian Productions has once again been given the accolade of presenting one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s spectacular shows, following on from the hugely successful performances of Evita, Cats and Sunset Boulevard.

It is a recognition of Taylorian’s outstanding reputation that the group has been entrusted with the first amateur production in the British Isles of one of Lord Lloyd Webber’s biggest musicals, and one of the West End’s longest running productions. Taylorian has earned that trust thanks to the exceptional work on previous productions of Lloyd Webber musicals, a testament to the excellence in amateur theatre the group has achieved.

‘Phantom’ is a worldwide phenomenon boasting spectacular scenery, sumptuous costumes and a soaring score packed with memorable songs including All I Ask of You, Music of the Night, Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again and, of course, the stirring The Phantom of the Opera.

The Taylorian production, which runs until August 22nd, features David Artus as the Phantom, Emily Coates as Christine, Damian Kneale as Raoul, Kristene Sutcliffe as Carlotta and Mandy Griffin as Madame Giry.

Producer Matt James said: ‘Phantom is arguably the world’s most famous musical, skillfully combining an absorbing story with unforgettable music. We’re honoured to have been allowed to stage this production, and everyone is working hard to deliver a show which will excite and delight the audience.

‘The enduring power of Phantom means the story and musical score are familiar to most, and thanks to our director John Cumberlidge the Gaiety audience will see the best elements of the show highlighted by fresh and innovative staging.'

He added: ‘Without the support of sponsors like SMP Partners it simply wouldn’t be possible to stage theatrical productions on this scale, and bring shows like this to the Island. We remain extremely grateful for their ongoing support.’

SMP Partners has supported many major productions at the Gaiety Theatre, including Sunset Boulevard, CATS, Tommy, the Wizard of Oz, Miss Saigon, Evita and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

Mark Denton, Managing Director of SMP Partners, said: ‘I am delighted we are once again involved in bringing an outstanding production to the Isle of Man.

‘It is a remarkable accolade for Taylorian to be granted the first amateur production of The Phantom of the Opera ever seen in the British Isles. It is a reflection of the exceptional productions Taylorian has staged that they have been given this unique honour.

‘This is an opportunity for Manx audiences to experience this phenomenal musical and, having seen many Taylorian productions over the years, I know the cast and crew will bring their usual professional, talent and commitment to ensure every evening is a night to remember.’

He added: ‘SMP Partners is committed to playing an active role in our community, and the musical theatre we have supported over the years has not only brought enjoyment to audiences, but also experience and opportunity to all those involved in staging the shows.

‘Productions like Phantom offer a wide range of people with a diverse set of talents, both on stage and behind the scenes, the chance to develop skills, build confidence and understand the value of teamwork.

‘I hope everyone involved enjoys the show as much as I know the audiences will.’

The Phantom of the Opera runs at the Gaiety Theatre from August 10th to the 22nd. Tickets, priced from ?23, are available by calling the Phantom Hotline on 600555, visiting the Welcome Centre or Villa Marina box office or online at www.villagaiety.com and www.taylorianproductions.net.
