Dragonflies take to the sky at Milntown

by isleofman.com 7th July 2015
As part of the ongoing maintenance and development of the Milntown Estate the Milntown team and Garden Designer Richard Lucas have been looking at ways of creating new and interesting features in the Milntown Gardens.  When Head Gardener Juan Quane introduced Richard Lucas to Willow Man John ‘Dog’ Callister they came up with an idea… dragonflies.

Five giant woven willow dragonflies have been recently installed over the Mill Pond. These carefully crafted insects were created by John ‘Dog’, each one took almost two days to complete and they are all slightly different.

With a 3-foot wingspan they are the size of Pterodactyls and have been carefully positioned so they appear to be flying just above the surface of the mill pond.

The temporary sculptures will be in place for a couple of years.

The Milntown Trust would like to thank John ‘Dog’ for taking on this challenge and creating these magical looking creatures.

Other sculpture within the gardens include Gary Bennett’s Manx Miners Memorial, benches, a bridge and a tree house made by local carpenter Jason McNee and of course Matt Crabbe’s dinosaur sculpture which is kindly on loan from the organisers of Manifest.

The Milntown Gardens are open daily (excluding Tuesdays) from 10am – 5pm (last entry at 4.30). Admission is ?3.00 adult, ?2.50 Senior Citizen, ?1 children, ?7 family ticket, 10% discount for groups of over 10. 2015 Garden Season Tickets are still available for only ?12.
