Ramsey Golf - Captain’s Weekend win for Paul Allison

by isleofman.com 1st July 2015
A windy weekend for 2015 Captain Phil Hassall and all those who played at Ramsey. Saturday’s Texas Scramble saw John Brownsden and Andrew Walker team up with Andrew Dyson in an interesting Texas format to take the day’s prize from Kevin Berry’s team in 2nd with Tim Eyre’s team in 3rd just edging out Peter Collister and Gill Cunningham occasionally assisted by husband, Sean.

Sunday saw slightly easier conditions in the morning but it was still a windy day. A full turn-out for Captain Phil Hassall with refreshments on the 7th meant scoring was always going to be close but with 7 players ending up better than par the result was quite impressive. On 37 points, Simon Callow and George Rawlinson battled it out for 6th and 7th place. Simon struggled on the closing holes dropping shots on the 15th, 16 and 18th and with George getting that par putt on the 18th he just managed to sneak ahead of Simon Callow. Also in the mix on 37 was Steve Mitchell and Lee Earnshaw. Steve played really steady golf but a dropped shot on the 16th allowed Lee Earnshaw just needing a tricky par putt on the 18th to get 5th place on a count-back, despite struggling over the other par 3 holes. The main prizes were fought out by contrasting players. Nick Dutnall, last week’s winner sported his new driver and opened the round with 5 fairly straight pars and a birdie on the 6th . Another birdie on the 16th put him in contention for 3rd place but dropped shots on the 15th and 17th allowed Michael McLorey to sneak ahead on a count-back into 3rd place. Michael’s pars on the 8th, 9th and 17th proved to be crucial. Chris Robinson went one better and took 2nd place on 39 points after a birdie on the 4th and a good run of pars from 13 through to 15. Paul Allison was the clear winner though by 3 shots and 42 points. His gross 70 was a truly magic round with 3 birdies covering up the occasional blip and ending a perfect Captain’s Day with a great win.

Paul Allison and Nick Dutnall will certainly be contenders for next week’s IOMA sponsored Club Championships, but with Stu Douglas back from a mid-season training camp break and Jamie Arniel ready to defend his crown it will be an exciting two days championship golf at Ramsey next weekend.
