Around 150 visitors enjoyed an open day at the Triskelion Polo Club on Sunday (June 21), which included a competitive match. The club, which is based at Grenaby Mooar, Malew, was set up towards the end of last year and has already taught many newcomers to the sport how to play the game. The open day featured a Douglas vs Rest of the Island demonstration match with all but one of the participants having only learnt to play polo in recent months.
The club is run by General Manager Frazer Houston and his brother Cameron who are both experienced polo players and all-round horsemen. For those visitors to the open day who were not familiar with the sport, Cameron gave a basic introduction to the rules before the game. He also played in the match.
“It was great to see so many people attending the open day and showing a real interest in what is a rapidly growing sport on the Island. Seeing so many newcomers to the sport taking part in a competitive match was a real thrill for everyone at the club, and it shows how accessible polo is. One of the players had never ridden a horse before attending the club for lessons, and we’re hoping that we will see some of the open day guests returning for lessons too.”
Between chukkas, Cameron Houston answered questions from spectators about the sport, and for those visitors looking to take up polo the open day was also an opportunity to find out about an introductory course which the club is organising on June 27 and 28. Lessons are also available every week, including evenings and weekends.
Triskelion Polo Club organise ‘Learn To Play’ events for all ages, including special sessions for schools, and there are also special corporate events. Lessons can also be arranged for individuals and small groups. All lessons are run by expert coaches who teach people to ride the club’s impressive stable of polo ponies, although anyone who owns their own pony is also welcome. All riding and polo equipment is provided for those who need it.
