A small group of archers assembled at Greeba on Sunday to shoot a variety of metric rounds as part of the Club’s Scratch League.
The wind was tricky as usual but the rain held off until the end of the day which was a relief to all concerned. With the Island Games in Jersey looming it was decided to shoot a 720 round for practice in the head to head element of the competition. That is 72 arrows shot at a single distance, 70m for Recurve and 50m for Compound.
In the Gents Compound division Rhys Moore had a brilliant day leading from start to finish to not only keep his father Dave off the top spot but to set a new personal best for the round. Pete Mumford started well but a few errant arrows and a miss in the fourth dozen put paid to his chances and he had to settle for third place. Colin Moore breaking in a new set of limbs and still searching for sight marks found himself pushed into fourth.
In the Ladies Compound Joy Gough found herself out-classed by an in form Sarah Rigby and had to settle for second.
In the Gents Recurve Danny Cowin ,who had been up all night acting as a support driver for the Parish Walk, was too exhausted to continue past the half way point which left Josh Trafford to shoot alone.
In the Ladies Recurve both Karen Lott and Barbara Harris were out of form but Karen took the win by a country mile in spite of nursing a shoulder injury.
In the afternoon Rhys and Dave Moore, Pete Mumford and Barbara Harris stayed on to shoot and were joined by Junior Recurvers Joseph Reaney and James Hill. The adults shot a Half Fita while the juniors shot a Short Metric II. The Half Fita is no longer a recognised round in World Archery but the club continue to shoot it on occasion as it gives the archers a chance to practice all the distances of a WA1440 round using half the arrows.
Weather conditions were slightly better in the afternoon and results improved accordingly. All of the adults shot personal bests for the round. Pete Mumford added 15 points to his pb and Barbara Harris added 87 points to hers. Rhys Moore continued his excellent form of the morning by not only adding 16 points to his personal but breaking the Club Record for the round into the bargain.
The Juniors who were shooting for the first time since the TT break were out of practice and their score were down on their normal standard. Joseph took the lead over the 40m distance and although James Hill fought back well at the 30m distance it was not enough and Joseph took the win by 23 points.
