The people of Castletown are invited to take part in a new initiative this evening (Tuesday, June 23rd) when the Commissioners will host a ‘Community Clean Up” around the town.
The Commissioners are teaming up with the charity Beach Buddies to tackle litter hotspots around the town, including lanes, footpaths and public areas.
It is the first time that the Commissioners have held such an event, and it’s hoped it may be repeated throughout the year in the future, depending on the success of Tuesday’s gathering.
All equipment necessary will be provided on the night, including litterpickers, gloves and bin bags, and the material collected will be removed afterwards by Beach Buddies, recycling items such as tin cans, glass and plastic bottles.
Volunteers are asked to wear suitable clothing for the weather, and to wear appropriate footwear, such as walking boots. All ages are invited and the Commissioners are particularly keen to see families and children involved.
The Commissioners hope that local residents will respond to the appeal for volunteers, but the event is not restricted just to people in Castletown, as Beach Buddies volunteers from across the south will also be taking part. They are keen that this should be a community event for the south of the Island.
The organisers say it will be relaxed and informal occasion and not strenuous work, as the items to be collected will mostly be lightweight items such as drinks cans, plastic and food wrappers.
Anyone who would like to help is asked to be at the Civic Centre for a 6pm start. The event will take no longer than 90 minutes, and will conclude with refreshments served in the Civic Centre afterwards, courtesy of the Commissioners.
