Ramsey Golf Report - Saturday 13th June

by isleofman.com 16th June 2015
Last Saturday, Manx Telecom and Liz Greenhill sponsored the Jim Greenhill Memorial AM AM and it was the morning starters that proved to be successful. Fergus Murdoch and Tony White’s teams played in the afternoon and managed to post 10 and 12 under par scores respectively. Bryan Waddington’s team also put in a 10 under par just edging out Fergie’s team on count back but it was up to Derek Parker’ boys to edge out Tony White by one shot with a creditable 13 under par.

Sunday saw some of Ramsey’s players returning from a tough day at the Grant Thornton IOMGU Championships to play in the Groves Cup sponsored by Sammy Tumblety. With great weather and a big field there was excellent scoring with 40 points not getting in the prizes! Rick Lings played the par 3’s well with birdies on the 3rd and 12th but double bogies on the 15th and 16th followed by further dropped shots on the 17th and 18th meant Rick went away with a “disappointing” 40 points! With the greens now recovering from recent tining and top dressing good putting was the key. Sean Cunningham also played the par 3’s well with birdies on the 12th and 17th making up for dropped shots on the 14th and 15th taking 4th place just edging out Toto Mazzone on count back all with 40 points. Toto’s 5 on the last hole being the crucially destructive for him.

You would expect after a windy and unsuccessful qualifying day at Mount Murray Jeff Ward had every right to take it easy but Jeff is a seasoned pro and really went for this one starting off with a birdie 4 on the opening hole. He followed it up with a 2 on the 3rd and birdies on the 4th, 5th and 9th before the inevitable tiredness began to set in with dropped shots on the closing holes. Jeff’s 41 points was almost enough to win this but young Jason Craine used his shots well during the round. An elusive par on the 17th and 18th would have given him the lead but bogies meant 41 points was only enough to nudge Jeff Ward into 3rd place. 42 points was the winning score and Nick Dutnall was the man to take the Groves Cup. He posted some significant birdies on the 2nd, 5th and the long 15th. An impressive round on any day!

Next Sunday is the Mid-Summer AM AM kindly sponsored by Andrew Walker. Tee times can be booked on line at www.ramseygolfclub.im.”
