Polo club hosts open day for all the family this Sunday

by isleofman.com 16th June 2015

If you’re looking for a Father’s Day treat with a difference, why not visit the Triskelion Polo Club which is hosting its first ever open day and staging a polo match? The club, which is based at Grenaby Mooar, Malew, was set up towards the end of last year and is run by General Manager Frazer Houston and his brother Cameron who are both experienced polo players and all-round horsemen. Frazer commented:

“This Sunday [June 21st] will be our first ever open day and it’s an ideal opportunity for the public to see a polo match between two teams of local players, get a look at how the club is run, and how to get involved. Entry is free all day and we will have a barbecue and refreshments. We’re looking forward to welcoming many new visitors to see this exciting and rapidly growing sport.”

Gates open at 11am on Sunday, and at noon there’s a demonstration of polo’s rules and tactics by the club coach and members. The Douglas vs Rest of the Island demonstration match begins at 12.30pm. After the game visitors will have a chance to meet the players, club coaches and staff and enjoy a barbecue and refreshments from 1.30pm onwards.

With expert coaching, it’s possible for complete novices to learn how to play polo, even if they have never previously learned to ride. Triskelion Polo Club organise ‘Learn To Play’ events for all ages, including special sessions for schools, and there are also special corporate events. Lessons can also be arranged for individuals and small groups. All lessons are run by expert coaches who teach people to ride the Club’s impressive stable of polo ponies, although anyone who owns their own pony is also welcome. All riding and polo equipment is provided for those who need it. The open day will be a chance to find out more about coaching for anyone who is interested in taking up the sport. Frazer added:

“Polo is much more accessible than most people think – we have already taught many complete novices at our polo school, most of whom do not own their own ponies. The sport is open to all ages to take part and ideal for corporate teams, either to increase brand recognition, for client entertainment, or for staff team-building.”
