Around 7.00pm on Thursday 4th June, Emergency Services dealt with a single vehicle road traffic accident at the Devil’s Elbow on the Peel to Kirk Michael coast road. The rider of a motorcycle has failed to negotiate the bend and both he and his machine fell into the ravine.
Taking advantage of a red flagged practice session to allow for debris to be cleared after an incident at Ballagarey, the Fire Service were able to gain permission from the Clerk of the Course to access the TT course at the Quarterbridge and exit at Ballacraine, reducing the time to respond significantly.
When the Fire Service Rope Rescue Team arrived they quickly set to work rigging safety lines to help coastguard, Police & Ambulance crews who had already made access to the stricken male rider to undertake an assessment of his injuries and to ensure that he was safe.
A plan was formulated by all four services and before long the unfortunate rider was placed in a stretcher and raised to an awaiting ambulance where he was assessed and then transported to hospital for follow up care and treatment.
Police Sergeant Andy Pailor said, “It is imperative whether you live on the Island or are visiting for the TT, you ride or drive to your limits; you take proper notice of the road signs, many of which are in place especially for the festival period; you take proper notice of your surroundings and expect the unexpected. This will help you to stay safe on the roads”.
The coast road was closed for a period of time whilst the scene was assessed and the extraction took place. Police officers did their best to keep the traffic flowing through the scene whenever possible to minimise disruption to members of the public.
