The Engineering and Manufacturing Sector, in association with the Chamber of Commerce and Isle of Man College are pleased to announce the winners of this year’s Foundation Apprenticeship in Engineering course Year 1 Awards.
- The Manx Utilities Award for Best Fitter – Veslin Ivanov
- The RLC Ronaldsway Award for Best CNC – Josh Berry
- The Swagelok Award for Best Miller – Josh Berry
- The Target Tools Award for Best Turner – Connor Collister
- The Triumph Actuation Systems Award for Best overall student – Jules Herrera
The Awards were given at the recent Isle of Man College Awards presentation on 21st May at the Villa Marina attended by the Chief Minister and other dignitaries.
The Foundation Apprenticeship in Engineering course is run every year at the Isle of Man College. It is based on a partnership between the College and the Chamber members of the Engineering and Manufacturing Sector in order to provide the development of skills that the Sector needs to address a future skills shortage in this growing industry.
The winners were selected from the first year students currently on the course. John Cashin, Assistant Program Manager and Course Tutor, commented:
“This year’s students have responded well to a very diverse course developed through a cooperation between the Sector and the College. Students have been studying a balance of practical and academic studies on both manual and computer numerically controlled machines at the new facilities at the Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre Hills Meadow and the College William Kennish site.”
“It is a fantastic example of collaboration between the Departments of Economic Development, Education and Children and the Sector addressing challenges and supporting the Isle of Man economy going forward into the future”
The awards follow on from the recent success of the course’s maturing Year 2 students who have all been given job offers upon successful completion of the course and will start work with Sector companies this July.
The recruitment process for this year’s course intake of 36 students to start in September is currently underway and applications are still being considered (go to www.iomcollege.ac.im for course information and application form if interested).
The Sponsoring Companies for the Awards are very much involved in encouraging people to develop the skills the Sector needs. Accordingly all are supporters of the Chamber of Commerce ACE (Awareness of Careers in Engineering) programme which works with all Primary and Secondary Schools, the College, Careers Service and Government Departments of Education and Children, and Economic Development with the aim of increasing the number of people developing the skills needed for employment in this thriving Sector.
