The Department of Infrastructure is leading a crackdown against antisocial behaviour in its public car parks.
Residents have complained about the unacceptable noise, litter and potential danger caused by drivers who treat Chester Street car park as a meeting place and racetrack.
The Department has said it will continue to work with the Isle of Man Constabulary and Douglas Borough Council to encourage car park users to act responsibly and respect those living nearby. CCTV footage will be reviewed and action taken in the event of an offence being committed.
Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne MHK said: ‘The Department invests thousands of pounds each year on maintaining car parking facilities to serve the many people who work and shop in Douglas town centre. Chester Street remains open during the evenings to support our entertainment venues and general night-time economy.’
He added: ‘Unfortunately a minority of people are behaving irresponsibly and are making life a misery for residents by revving vehicle engines, performing high-speed manoeuvres and honking horns late at night. Our car parks are not racetracks, playgrounds or places to eat fast food and then dump the litter. The Department is appealing for these people to think of others, some of whom may be elderly or vulnerable, and remember they are in a largely residential area.
‘If incidents are reported, the Department’s officers will study CCTV pictures and seek to identify the offenders with a view to taking action. The misuse of our car parks will not be tolerated.’
