Men’s Competition Result:

Colin Aldridge Memorial/Maughold Bowl Mixed Foursomes/Deemster Cowley Medal Results

The Colin Aldridge Memorial always brings out the best in Ramsey golf and a nail biting finish was the order of the day.  3rd place saw 5 players tied on 38 points so yet again it was Ramsey’s closing holes being key to who takes a podium spot. Neil Hartley had a steady front 9 and started the road home with a nice 2 on the 12th but his wheel fell off by dropping two shots on the 13th and  series of bogey’s on the closing holes. Paul Morris, was playing some steady stuff but struggling to stay out of the hazards. No justice for Paul and a double bogey on the 15th and crucially the 18th was costly. Tim Kelly suffered from a similar back 9 bogey fest and again a 4 on the final hole locked him out of 3rd place. Returning golfer, Jonny Shields, showed promise with birdies on the 2nd and 17th but his inconsistent round with no returns on the 4th and 7th wasn’t enough to get better than 4th.  3rd place went to our local Azzurri, Toto Mazzonne. Great birdies on the back 9 did it for him, 13th and 14th and a par on the 18th was enough to get 3rd place from others on 38 points. Slightly better, after some recent indifferent form, was Sean Cunningham with 39 points and 2nd place after a late birdie on the 17th. First place on a massive 45 points and seemingly playing a different game was Barry Teare. Dropping a shot on the 1st did not put him off and what followed was some steady golf with birdies on the 3rd and 10th. There were no nerves and pars on the 17th and 18th was enough to take first place with ease whilst the others scrapped and battled for the minor places. Colin would have laughed!

The Maughold Bowl saw a number of mixed teams play this tricky format. With the green’s excellent and the sun blazing it was a great day out.  The top places went to Bryan Waddington’s team in 3rd with 70 and Sean and Gill Cunningham just edging it with a better back 9 to take 2nd place. Pauline Merrill and Eric Corkish teamed up and played some steady golf all the way through. Birdie 2’s on the 3rd and 12th just gave them the distance they needed to make it a perfect day.

Local fitness guru Peter Walkom sponsored the Deemster Cowley Medal. This turned out to be the day of the high handicapper and some excellent scoring. Ian Lennox and Martin Kinrade just missed out on the prizes with net 67’s. Martin must be pleased though as his gross 73 won the best gross of the day. Also just missing out, but beating par, were Tim Pressley, Phil Hassall and Nigel Gregg on 68. On 69 was last year’s champ, Steve Kelly joined by Martin Webb, Tim Eyre and Sean Cunningham.  Third place went to Steve Rundle whose 4 pars on the front 9 laid down a solid platform. A couple of dropped shots on the closing holes saw him lose out but 66 was a great score. Stan Ryzak had a good front 9 but played well until  a 7 on the 18th. Still smiling and a 65 on the board with 2nd place was a great weekend’s golf for Stan. The winner was junior golfer Dylan Pickles, in his first full season playing senior competitions. All credit to Dylan with a few pars scattered throughout the round and no major disasters. Consistency is the key and Dylan showed he has the right stuff to hold on and a 64 was enough to win the day. Great golf Dylan. Friday 29th May will be the presentation and a fun par 3 competition as part of Ramsey Golf Club’s “Get Into Golf” promotion. Everyone is welcome, especially non-members.
