Carers of people with dementia or memory impairment are being encouraged to attend a free event tomorrow (Wednesday, 20 May) which aims to help support them in their role.
The course, which has been jointly organised by the Department of Health and Social Care and the Isle of Man branch of the Alzheimer’s Society, is one of a series of events to mark Dementia Awareness Week which runs from 16 – 22 May.
The course will cover a range of topics including:
- An introduction to the Older Persons Mental Health Service and signposting to other services
- How to recognise the signs, symptoms and potential progression of dementia and memory impairment
- Advice on what carers can do, such as communication and practical tips and tricks
- A question and answer session with professionals from the Older Persons Mental Health Team.
Carers can choose from one of two sessions:
- 09:30 – 12:30 (with a complimentary lunch at 12:30 after the morning session until 13:30)
- 13:30 – 16:30 (with a complimentary lunch at 12:30 prior to the start of the session at 13:30)
Both sessions take place at Keyll Darree Education and Training Centre on the Noble’s Hospital campus.
Although not essential, it would be helpful if anyone wishing to attend could contact 642879 to advise on their preferred session and whether or not they wish to attend the complementary lunch.
