The Steam Packet says its engineers contained a blaze in the chimney stack lagging and the crossing, which left Douglas at 8.45am, was allowed to continue.
No passengers or crew were injured during the incident and it's thought there has been no significant damage to the ferry.
The Ben's passengers were kept informed of the situation by the captain
The vessel was due to arrive in Heysham at 1pm and return later as scheduled.
