Douglas Promenade display to be staffed

by isleofman.com 14th May 2015
Members of the public who have questions or comments about the proposed redevelopment of Douglas Promenade will have an opportunity to talk to an officer from the design team.

The public display at the Sea Terminal will be staffed for the next three Saturdays – 16, 23 and 30 May – between 10am and 2pm. At all other times the exhibition will not be staffed, although people can submit written questions at the display stand or email comments to DouglasProm@gov.im

A short film highlighting the principles underlying the design approach for Douglas Promenade is also being shown as part of the commitment to sharing information with the public.

Many people have already viewed the Department of Infrastructure’s plans, which feature modern design techniques and an innovative new layout. As well as delivering much-needed improvements to the highway, footways and drainage, the refurbishment scheme aims to strike a better balance between the needs of road users and pedestrians.

Presentations have been delivered to Tynwald Members and key stakeholder groups, including the Chamber of Commerce, Crossroads Care, Manx Blind Welfare Society, Royal National Institute of Blind People, Manx Hospitality Association, Tourism and Leisure Strategy Group, Douglas Regeneration Committee, Douglas Development Partnership and Douglas Borough Council. Feedback has been very positive and suggestions will be taken into account as the proposals are developed in more detail.

Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne MHK commented: ‘The plans have generated a lot of public interest and it’s encouraging that so many people have taken the time to visit the display at the Sea Terminal. I recognise that people may have further questions about the project, so a member of the Department’s design team will be available over the next three Saturdays to provide additional information.’

The Minister also said that he is fully aware of the concerns and issues that have been raised on behalf of people with disabilities.

He added: ‘The Department has been working with a number of Manx organisations and their representatives. We have been able to discuss in detail the emerging proposals and to refine our approach to incorporate their advice. Indeed, we held constructive meetings only last week and will continue to work together throughout the detailed design process.’
