A street collection held in the Isle of Man last weekend for the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal for the Nepal Earthquake has raised more than ?15,800.
The money, collected by volunteers in Douglas, Ramsey, Peel, Castletown and Port Erin, has gone directly to the DEC to be distributed to aid agencies working on the ground to provide shelter, food and medical supplies. More than 7,000 people are thought to have been killed in the 7.8 magnitude earthquake and millions have been displaced. Aid workers face particular difficulties in reaching rural areas in the mountainous country which has also suffered periods of heavy rain since the earthquake struck.
The collection on the Island was co-ordinated by the One World Centre, which is grateful to all the volunteers who helped with collecting and counting. Further donations can still be made via the DEC collection tins in Manx Co-op stores across the Island or direct through the DEC website at
dec.org.uk.
Separately, retiring collections at this year’s Manx Music Festival raised ?3,000 which has gone to support smaller charitable projects working in Nepal. Shakti Man in Ramsey, which sells fairly-traded goods including items from Nepalese producers, has also been raising money to send to Fair Trade Group Nepal to distribute as needed and Onchan Rotary Club have been fundraising to buy Shelterboxes to help some of earthquake victims who have been made homeless.
