Are you interested in history and heritage?

There will be an open evening for the College’s new History & Heritage degree at the Nunnery Campus on Old Castletown Road on Thursday 7 May from 6pm-8pm. Come along and find out what the programme has to offer. You’ll be able to meet some of the lecturers and learn about the modules that you can study. You’ll also find out what it’s like to be a student at the College, and even sit in on a taster lecture!

The History & Heritage degree is aimed at school-leavers and mature students who are interested in learning about the past, and the way in which the past still influences us today. Students will study a broad range of topics relating to history and heritage, from the local to the international, through a combination of core and optional modules.

Core first-year modules introduce history as a discipline, European and world history, and the study of heritage. Optional first-year modules explore the making of modern Ireland (1603 to 1923), the history and archaeology of the Greeks, Etruscans, Romans and Celts, and the history and heritage of the Isle of Man.

Second and third year modules explore a variety of topics in more depth, including American civil rights, crime and poverty in the 19th century, the Russian Revolution, ancient Greece and Rome, the French Revolution, the Celtic Revival, the history of the Isle of Man, the English civil war, and the heritage industry.

Methods of teaching include lectures, seminars, tutorials, and fieldtrips. Second year students have the option of undertaking a five-week work placement or carrying out an independent research project.

The Isle of Man is an ideal place to study history and heritage. The Island has a thriving heritage industry and a wide variety of heritage attractions for study. Examining local heritage issues alongside international case studies, gives students unique insight into the questions facing the heritage industry today.

The History & Heritage degree is actively supported by Manx National Heritage. Experts from MNH will contribute lectures on various aspects of the heritage industry, and students will have access to the fantastic resources available in the Manx Museum Library & Archives for the study of Manx history and heritage.

Studying at the College has several advantages over studying at a UK University. Not only do students retain their social and family networks, but College students typically obtain better degree classes than their UK counterparts. This is partly due to the excellent lecturing staff that we have on the Island and the splendid facilities that are available at the College. It’s also a result of smaller class sizes, which means that students get an exceptional level of academic support throughout their degree. By studying on-Island, you have the opportunity to meet directly with potential employers. Our graduates are also more likely to find a suitable job than students in the UK with over 90% of College students routinely securing relevant employment before graduation.
